Why Insurance is Important for Grocers

Business insurance is important no matter what type of grocery store you own; be it a large mini-market or perhaps a small village store as it protects your business against some of the risks and issues you face. But what type of cover is the most relevant to grocery stores?  Much like any other business, you may need to take out employers liability insurance to protect you, should your employees be injured whilst working. Additionally to this, you may require public liability cover should something happen to customers when they visit your store.

About the Food Retail Industry

Whilst customers today have more and more choice in where they buy their groceries, the truth is that there are still grocers up and down the country providing specialist services.

Although grocers mainly stock fresh fruit and vegetables, due to the competition from supermarkets they have needed to adapt over recent years to differentiate themselves. Many have branched out to become stockists of other fresh produce including cheese, deli meats, and even tinned goods too.

Usually grocery stores are found on high streets in towns and villages throughout the country, offering a local service to those who live there. More often than not, they are owned and run by one family for a number of generations, much like butcher shops and bakers.

If you do decide to open your own grocery store then it is important that you think about all of the things that you should do in order to set up not only a successful business but one that can provide a service for many years to come.

HOW DO I KNOW I AM GETTING A GOOD DEAL?

SME Insurance acts as a broker and we are not tied to a particular insurer. We give our customers the ability to search and compare products from a number of UK insurers, so you can choose the right product for you and your business, at the right price. To offer you these insurance options, we use the strength of our market position and our close relationships with the insurers to negotiate the best possible cover and prices we can for our clients.

WHAT DO I DO IF I NEED TO MAKE A CLAIM?

You will need to contact the claims department on 0330 134 4606 or email claims@pclaims.co.uk.

WHAT IF MY INSURANCE REQUIREMENTS CHANGE DURING MY POLICY TERM?

If something about your business or property changes, it may require you to adjust your policy. We can make the changes over the phone and update your cover as necessary. For example, if you wanted to fit an ATM machine in your shop, you should call us to check how it affects your insurance policy. It is always worth calling to check how changes to your business might affect your cover. Some alterations may increase your risk factors and therefore should you have to make a claim, you might have voided your policy by not informing us of changes made.
