Vegetarian Week 2017:  Young People Behind a Huge Surge in Numbers

As we head into National Vegetarian Week 2017, more and more people are choosing to adopt vegetarian and vegan diets. Indeed, the number of vegans has risen by 360%*1 over the past decade to more than half a million people in the UK, while vegetarians now number more than 1.6 million*2.

The big increase in people choosing meat and diary-free diets is, it seems, dominated by younger people – millennials to be precise. In fact, research commissioned by the Vegan Society found that 42 per cent of all vegans are aged 15-34, with just 14 per cent aged over 65*1.

These days it seems that most people “‘go vegetarian” for ethical or compassionate reasons, but there may be health benefits too. Indeed, there is some evidence to suggest that diets rich in plant foods - such as grains, beans, fruits and vegetables - may reduce the risk of many chronic diseases*3,4,5.

Go Veggie this Vegetarian Week!

With all that in mind, National Vegetarian Week 2017 was set up to encourage more people to try a vegetarian diet*6 – even if it’s only for a week.

Backed by TV’s Hairy Bikers, it offers a range of support, including recipes, for anyone keen to get involved. So, if you want to know what all the fuss is about, visit www.nationalvegetarianweek.org to sign up.

You could even help support your local greengrocer along the way.
