National BBQ Week 2017:  The Burger is Back in Fashion

As it's National BBQ Week 2017 here are some fun facts for you:

  • Britain is Europe’s number one BBQ nation [1]. In fact, it seems we Brits are now nuts about charcoal-based, al fresco dining – and fired up the BBQ on 115.3 million occasions last year – an 8.4% increase on 2015 [2].
  • What’s more, BBQ-ing at home, along with at-home eating and entertaining is now the number one home leisure activity in summer – and two-thirds of all UK households now own a BBQ grill [3].

But, what will we all be eating as we fire up the BBQs during National BBQ Week 2017? 

According to a recent newspaper article, research from retail analysts Kantar Worldpanel [4] suggests the old favourites still dominate, although burgers have re-invented themselves to overtake the humble sausage.

Indeed, burgers were the meat of choice in a third more barbecues in 2016, while sausages were left out of around 2.5 million BBQ meals over the same period. Chicken suffered the biggest fall, having been left out of around 6.3 million BBQs.

But our choices are not limited to those basic, if tasty, staples. According to the experts at National BBQ Week, US style “low and slow” cooking is becoming more popular – especially dishes like pulled pork – as are BBQ recipes from hot and spicy food regions like the Caribbean, North Africa, and Southern USA [5].

Fire up the BBQ This Week!

So, if the weather is kind – what better week to fire up the BBQ? Whether you stick to the burgers and sausages, or try out something a bit different, you won’t be alone. The facts don’t lie – families all across Britain will be tucking in [3].

If you’re stuck for inspiration, fear not. According to TV chef, Simon Rimmer, lemon, olive oil, rosemary and garlic make a simple marinade that works well with virtually anything – chicken, fish, lamb, and pork [6].
