Why Insurance is Important for Engineering Firms

Engineering firms come in all shapes and sizes, but all face an unusually broad range of risks. There are property and machinery risks, employee and visitor risks, all the risks that arise from supplying customers, and the risks that come from the public interacting with your products.

That is why putting the right engineering insurance in place is so important. It’s about peace of mind; knowing that you have all those risks covered so your business is ready and protected if something goes wrong.

For instance, engineering insurance and precision engineering insurance should help you recover if your premises or machinery are affected by a serious incident like fire or flood – covering the cost of repair or reinstatement, and lost income. It should also protect you from all the liabilities than can arise from employing people, supplying goods to customers, and their eventual use. Depending on the nature of your business and supply chain, you might also need cover for stock, goods in transit, book debts, and more.

That complexity is why getting help from an expert is so important. Because peace of mind can only be a result of knowing you have the right cover for your business – tailored to the risks you face – at the right price.

About the Engineering Industry

It’s a sad fact that, over the last 30 years, the UK engineering sector has shrunk by two-thirds[1]. But in recent years, the sector has grown by around 7%[2]. In fact, it remains a vitally important part of the economy, with around 650,000 engineering firms in the UK[3] employing 5.7 million people – that is 19% of the total UK workforce[4].

What’s more, engineering and precision engineering firms make a massive contribution to the wider economy. It contributes a huge £486 billion to UK GDP and supports 1.74 jobs for every person employed in engineering[5]. Even more encouraging are forecasts for future growth – it’s estimated that the demand for new, skilled engineers will exceed 250,000 by the end of 2024[6].

Of course, in amongst those 650,000 firms is a diverse array of businesses. Engineering businesses employing four or fewer people might make up 80% of the total[7] but the list of engineering sectors is a long one, running through avionics and architectural engineering to mechanical and transport engineering.

Whichever type of engineering business you own, there are plenty of risks to consider – from safety and security to broader issues like the economy and general trading conditions. It’s vital to know about and mitigate them as far as possible, and to give thought to your insurance needs – to make sure your cover would help to protect you, your business, and your staff if something were to go wrong.
