Who is Your High Street Hero?

At smei we believe the high street should be the beating heart of cities, towns and villages across the country. Every high street is different but they all have one essential thing in common – they offer a focal point for communities.

The high street is not just about shopping. It brings local people together with diverse local businesses and creates a sense of local character on every high street across the UK.

That is why we are so passionate about the UK high street and want to champion the local businesses that make them special, and it’s why we launched our High Street Heroes competition. We want to find and celebrate real businesses from high streets across the UK, showcasing some of the best independent shops – from beauticians and hairdressers to barber shops, cafés, restaurants and bars.

To support our competition, we conducted a survey with 2,000 people, to find out what makes the high street special for people across the UK. We’ve been overwhelmed by the response, which has highlighted a stunning variety of very individual high street businesses.

These ‘High Street Heroes’ now form part of our new ‘Business Insurance for Me’ campaign, which seeks to find the best of the best independent high street businesses. Take a look at our website to see some of the great businesses that make the UK high street special – from hair and beautyfood and drink, to shop and retail, and hotel and B&B businesses and much more.

The survey also revealed that we are not alone in our admiration for the UK high street, and the business people who make it what it is. People from across the UK took part, sending a clear message of support for local, independent businesses, and telling us why the UK high street is special to them.

Being able to browse a good selection of products was important for more than half (52%) of respondents, while value for money was a hit for 45%.  But it was the individuality of these businesses that people really valued.

Around half (47%) of UK high street shoppers love that fact that local stores are run by friendly people, while 39% visit the high street because of the sense of familiarity and a desire to support local businesses.  Meanwhile, a quarter (24%) see the UK high street as an opportunity to visit quirky and unique shops.

All of this gives us such optimism for the UK high street, which has been through some tough times over recent years. The sheer diversity of the businesses, and the real feelings of support and love identified by our campaign, tells us that the high street is still as important as ever.

We want to do our bit to promote local firms, as part of our commitment to the UK high street, so keep an eye out for our ‘High Street Heroes’ campaign as it progresses.  We will be showcasing the people and stories behind a series of businesses – who knows, maybe one of them will be your own high street hero.

Why are we doing it? It’s simple. At smei, we’ve been helping high street businesses since 2002. As an award-winning insurance broker, with over 19,000 customers, our vision is to deliver the right business insurance for the UK’s high street shops and small businesses, easily and without fuss, at a competitive price.

Behind that is a simple aim – to protect all the local businesses that help to make the UK high street special, and to give the people behind them the peace of mind that allows them to do what they do best – run their businesses.
