Ten best practices for making
your website mobile

We have already looked at how to make your website shine but what about how to make sure your website is available in the mobile world.

Having a site optimised for those who surf the internet from their phone or tablet is important, as a large proportion of visitors are likely to be viewing your site from these devices.

Here are our top ten things to keep in mind when you want to be visible whilst your customers are mobile!

1. Don’t leave them hanging

People who visit your website whilst on the go may be short on time. Perhaps they are visiting during their commute or even just while they have a spare five minutes. Whatever the reason, making sure that your site loads quickly means that they are more likely to remain on the page.

2. Navigate freely

A mobile site that you simply cannot manoeuvre around to find what you are looking for is likely to be frustrating. It is one thing to have a website that can be viewed on a mobile or tablet, but it is another thing to make sure that it can be effectively used to make a purchase or learn more about your business.

3. Think about the fingers

Following on from the above point, not only should your site be easy to navigate but it should be designed with fingers in mind; after all, they are the ones that will be doing most of the clicking and scrolling. To put this in context, have you ever visited a mobile site which has small or closely aligned buttons or links, which has resulted in you accidentally clicking on the option next to the one you wanted?  The combination of small screens and large fingers can be frustrating for users – therefore the spacing of elements on your page need to be considered carefully.

4. Visibility is the key

When it comes to searching on a mobile for a website customers will often use shorter phrases and keywords. With this in mind, your mobile site should be optimised to be visible in mobile searches which may be different to how your website is created for a computer based search.

5. Accessible

Being accessible means that people can use and understand your mobile site. The text should be simple and easy to read and any navigation points should be clear. That way, different people visiting your site should be able to find exactly what they want.

6. Easy conversion

In order to turn a visitor into a customer you should make it as easy as possible to make a purchase of your product or get in touch for more information on your service. On a mobile site this becomes all the more important; so don’t forget to check on your conversion figures/data to see the buying behaviour of people visiting your site.

7. Keep it local

While a mobile website can mean that customers are able to view your site no matter where they are, it shouldn’t mean that you forget about those ones close to you. Make sure that you pay attention to the localities of people visiting your site and take advantage of this. If they are local then you can offer incentives for repeat customers or perhaps offer people locality based special offers when they visit through the mobile site.

8. Seamless and fluid  

Loading quickly and with minimal hold up is important on a mobile site. A jerky, unresponsive and slow loading page will often result in a customer going elsewhere.

9. Redirect

Always ensure that no matter where you need to redirect your customer to, that the redirection link works and they will find themselves exactly where they need to be. Also, redirecting customers to your standard website can also mean that they will easily find the information they are looking for.

10. Keep listening and learning.

Just like any aspect of business, creating a mobile site is concerned with growing and learning with every day that passes. If you stop listening to how things are working then you will never become more successful as a business.
