Create a Retail Christmas to Remember

Posted 13/12/19

From traditional Dickensian displays to magical winter wonderlands, it’s not just city centre stores that can create wonderful festive experiences. With a little imagination and some twinkling fairy lights, small retailers can make great seasonal visual merchandising.

Tactical experiences make a big difference to shoppers at Christmas, so make it as easy as possible for customers to be inspired. However you decide to decorate your premises, get it right and your efforts could have a pleasingly positive impact on your profits.

PwC1 predicts that this year’s Christmas spending is likely to fall to an average of £408 per shopper (from £421 in 2018), and the majority of people (53%) will be more cautious with their expenditure this year. So how can you make the most of your window and in-store displays to maximise festive revenue opportunities?

Attracting footfall and inspiring customers to purchase is ultimately your goal, so think about the products you sell and how you want passersby to perceive you. If you’re in the gift market, select a range of products covering different price ranges, offer free gift wrapping and showcase examples to inspire and entice people into your shop.

Keep it local. Is there something synonymous with where your business is located? Base your display on a local theme that people can relate to.

For coffee houses, bakeries and food retail, upsell ancillary products such as mugs or confectionary, for example, to accompany gourmet coffee and tea items.

It’s not too late to spruce up your shopfront. Springboard1 is predicting Saturday, December 21 to be the busiest day of trading when footfall growth is forecast to be higher than the 3.3% registered on Black Friday.

However you decide to transform your shop, restaurant, or business; with a little glitter and spray paint, smart use of repurposed items as props, and festive colours, your business can truly embrace the Christmas spirit.
