What Type of Salon Insurance do you Need?

Employers liability insurance

If you employ staff, whether they’re casual, temporary, or permanent employees, it’s a legal requirement to take out employers liability insurance. If you don't, you could face a heavy fine from the Health and Safety Executive.

Salon public liability insurance

No two salons are the same, but you all have one thing in common, you have a duty of care to anyone who enters your premises. For this reason public liability cover is one of the key components of your salon insurance policy.

Public liability insurance protects you if a customer, supplier, or member of the public suffers illness or injury, or damage to their property, because of your negligence. Having public liability insurance for your salon will cover the cost of a claim, plus any associated legal costs.

Treatment liability insurance

A ‘standard’ public liability policy may not cover you if you accidentally injure someone whilst cutting their hair, burn them with straightening irons or cover you for any other mishaps caused by treatments you may provide.

Treatment liability cover is usually an extension of your public liability policy and will specify the treatments being insured. It is important to disclose all treatments to insurers and this is reflected within your policy documentation. If you are unsure if a treatment is covered, our team is here to help answer your questions.

Business premises insurance

Your salon premises are a vital element of your business – without premises, it would be challenging for your business to operate – so you also need building insurance cover, plus protection for your valuable equipment.

Business interruption (BI)

BI insurance provides financial protection should an insured event such as a fire or flood prevents you from trading for a period of time.

Equipment breakdown cover

To ensure the costly machines and equipment vital to your salon can be replaced or repaired should they fail.

Our flexible approach to tailor-made policies and our ability to cater for non-standard risks means we may be able to provide cover for risks that some insurers deem too risky. These can include flat-roofed premises, start-up businesses, and premises that have suffered previous claims due to fire or flood.

Salon Insurance FAQs

A hair and beauty salon typically needs several types of insurance to protect the business, its employees, and its customers. Key types of insurance that you should consider are: treatment risk liability, public and products liability, employers liability and business interruption. Insurance in a beauty salon is essential to protect the business, its assets, employees, and clients from various risks and liabilities. It helps ensure financial stability and peace of mind, allowing you salon to continue operating without financial pressures if the worst should happen. Your specific insurance needs may vary based on the size and scope of your salon's services and treatments.

The cost of salon insurance will vary based on several factors. These include the size and location of your salon, the types of services you offer, the number of employees, your insurance coverage limits, your claims history, and more.

We’ll provide a tailor-made policy which means you’ll only pay for the cover you actually need. For example, multiple options may be available from our panel of insurers ‒ each with differing features and prices. We will present you with the possibilities so you can make an informed decision on which option is most appropriate for you.

Yes. The type of cover you need depends on the type of hairdresser you are. For example, all hairdressers need to have public liability insurance to cover their legal liabilities in the case of damage or injury to clients.

Salon owners will need business interruption cover to ensure they're protected if, for example, fire prevents the business from operating.

Mobile hairdressers may need goods in transit cover to protect business equipment and stock against damage while in transit between customers. If you're unsure of the type or level of cover you'll need, our team will be able to guide you.

Yes, most insurers will require this level of experience. Some insurers may consider less experienced practitioners depending upon their qualifications. Please speak with one of our advisers to discuss further. As long as you have the required qualifications and accreditations to carry out your treatments, our insurers will be happy to offer you a quotation. We won't ask to see a copy of them, but you may be asked to provide them in the event of a claim.
