Whether you are partial to the odd traditional scone and clotted cream or appreciate endless cups of tea, the UK has a number of quaint tea rooms, hotels, and restaurants to help you get involved in National Tea Week.

Where did Afternoon Tea originate from?

Afternoon tea has graced British afternoons since the 1840s, when dinner often wasn’t served until 8pm. People created a mini meal in the middle of the day which traditionally consisted of small finger sandwiches, scones, and sweet treats such as cakes and pastries. This afternoon meal soon grew into a social event, especially in the upper class society.

This became even more prominent once Queen Victoria herself took part in the tradition, creating the concept of the “tea reception”, including anything from a close selection of friends to hundreds of society’s most important faces.

It is believed that Anna, 7th Duchess of Bedford, actually started the tradition of afternoon tea as she often felt tired during the middle of the day and a pot of tea and snack would seem like perfect pick me up. She soon invited friends to join her and from there the concept of afternoon tea began.1
